A view from a Pod

Having been with the Trust now for just over 15 months, I have learned many new skills working in a professional environment. Not only have I developed skills and knowledge within buildings and premises but working and communicating with colleagues across the Trust and beyond has developed my understanding of the holistic journey of school improvement, building and premises being one part of a huge picture.

The apprenticeship scheme that the Trust offers is a very appealing and opportunistic programme: it allows young people, such as myself, to gain experience and acquire knowledge in a field I am passionate about and hope to secure a future career within.

I work closely with David Fitzgibbons, shadowing and learning about buildings and how we maintain and upgrade schools and other small buildings within our Trust.  This also includes any maintenance work from the assessing, planning and organisation of improvement work.  I have had the opportunity to produce building plans using computer aided design softwares such as ‘Auto CAD’ as well as doing the surveying work myself in order to produce such plans.

Having an apprenticeship with White Woods Primary Academy Trust doesn’t just involve  practical, on-the-job learning but also incorporates academic learning.   The Trust supports me in attending college once a week in order to study for a BTEC in construction. This will secure me a level 3 qualification in addition to a NVQ qualification, both of which are essential qualifications for me to progress a career within construction.
